A Georgia woman who the police believe fatally stabbed four of her children and their father was taken into custody Thursday morning.
The woman was discovered with the bodies of her family members inside the home in Loganville, Ga., a small city about 35 miles east of Atlanta. Criminal charges against her were pending, the police said.
Officers from the Gwinnett County police and fire departments responded to a call from the home placed by an “adult female” shortly before 5 a.m. on Thursday, the authorities said. There, they found the mother, the five bodies and the surviving child, who the police said was “suffering from serious injuries.”
That child was taken to a hospital, and the police were not sure of her condition. On Thursday morning, the victims had not yet been taken from the home, as police continued to investigate.
The police said that all of the children were under the age of 10 and that the man was in his mid-30s. The police have not yet released any additional information on the identities of the dead or the woman.
Multiple local news reports suggested that the family had recently moved to the area.
“What prompts a person to take the life of such innocent children and her spouse is something we may never understand,” the department said in a statement. “This is a horrendous crime not only for the victims but for the extended family, neighborhood and community.”
