A man in Mississippi killed eight people, including a police officer, in shootings at three locations on Saturday and Sunday, the local authorities said.
The police said Willie Cory Godbolt, 35, of Bogue Chitto, Miss., was in custody on Sunday for the shootings, according to local news media reports.
While handcuffed on the side of a road, a man whom The Clarion-Ledger identified as Mr. Godbolt said he had been “having a conversation” at a home in Bogue Chitto about “me taking my children home” when a police officer arrived, apparently having been called by a neighbor.
“My pain wasn’t designed for him,” Mr. Godbolt said of the officer who was killed. “He was just there.”
At the first location, which the police were called to at 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, the authorities found three female victims and the police officer, according to The Clarion-Ledger. They found two male victims at a location in Brookhaven, and a man and a woman at a separate location in Brookhaven, the newspaper reported.
Several local news media reports said the authorities had identified the slain officer as William Durr, 36.
The police have not yet identified the other seven victims.
In an interview on Sunday, the Rev. Eugene Edwards of New Zion Union M.B. Church in Bogue Chitto said he had known Mr. Godbolt for 19 years.
